This connection between the natural geologic features and the archeological evidence of the Oneota community are interesting and make a great deal of sense. I am not a geologist but I am a fan of Marcia Bjornerud who wrote Timefulness: How Thinking Like a Geologist Can Help Save the World; and she has had several wonderful essays in The New Yorker. I'm curious if this "Oneota" designation is related to the Oneota of upstate New York?
I'm not familiar with Marcia Bjornerud; I'll have to check out her work.
The "Oneota" terminology comes from a river system in Iowa. I've heard of the city in New York but never made the connection back to the Midwest. Maybe there's a settler cennection back here to Iowa?
I would be surprised if there weren't some connection. I have been surprised to learn High Cliff State Park near me in Wisconsin is part of the tail end of the Niagara escarpment. And having lived in upstate for a couple decades I have found there are lots of connections in the history of the tribes before whites arrived out east and the Midwestern plains. Marcia is a geology professor at Lawrence University here in Appleton WI. I found her writing as a geologist easy to understand and deeply enriching. I look forward to your next post.
